Overcoming A Challenge During Your Mental Health Journey
Updated: Sep 15, 2022
Making your mental health a priority is one of the best things you can do. You don’t need to wait until you’re already dealing with a problem like depression or anxiety to take charge. But, even if you do, you should give yourself a pat on the back for taking the right steps forward.
No matter where you are in your mental health journey, it’s important to recognize that life isn’t always smooth sailing. No matter what you prepare yourself for, things happen.
Challenges happen. Unfortunately, certain challenges can threaten to throw you off track. In some cases, they can succeed. So, what can you do to overcome a challenge during your mental health journey? Even if you weren’t necessarily prepared for it, how can you quickly get back on your feet and keep making forward progress?

Take Care of Yourself
One of the best things you can do during a difficult time is to focus on taking care of yourself. That starts by understanding your self-worth and value.
Practice self-compassion. No matter what challenge you’re dealing with, you’ll have an easier time getting through it if you’re kind to yourself. Self-care is always important, but even more so when you’re struggling with something difficult.
Make time for things you enjoy. Involve yourself in your favorite hobbies, spend time with people you care about, and take care of your physical health. Regular exercise won’t only keep your body healthy, but it can boost your mood and reduce stress levels – both crucial during a challenging time!
Quiet Your Negative Thoughts
When you’re going through a tough situation, it’s easy for your mind to wander. That’s especially true if you already struggle with anxiety. You might worry about what will happen next, or even criticize yourself for thinking you could have done something to make things different.
It’s not always easy to silence negative thoughts, especially in times of crisis. But, quieting those thoughts will make it easier to stay focused on the present. Even if things are difficult, staying in the moment will help you to feel less overwhelmed by those challenges.
Perhaps the best way to silence those thoughts is through mindfulness. It’s already a great tool to help with both anxiety and depression, and a wonderful way to manage stress. By practicing mindfulness throughout each day, you’ll be better equipped to handle the challenge you’re facing because you won’t be distracted by competing thoughts.
Lean on Your Support System
You should never feel like you have to go through a challenge on your own. No matter what it is, the people in your life who care about you are there to help.
Leaning on others will make it easier to cope in healthy ways. They can hold you accountable when it comes to taking care of your mental health and can provide you with an outlet to de-stress. If you talk to someone not directly impacted by whatever challenge you’re going through, they may even be able to give you a different perspective that will help you to get through it.
If you’re still struggling to overcome a challenge during your mental health journey, consider seeking out professional help. Working with a therapist is one of the best ways to stay on the right track. They can help you peel back the layers of whatever you’re going through, and work with you on ways to get through and overcome it.
